On behalf of the Board of Governors of the International Community Foundation, it is our pleasure to
transmit this 2009 Annual Report. Despite the global economic downturn, we are pleased to announce
that 2009 was a year of steady and measured progress for our foundation. The generosity of individual
donors along with gifts from corporate and foundation donors produced over $6.8 million in gifts
resulting in $5.2 million in grants to 51 nonprofit organizations outside of the United States. These grants
provided critical operational and programmatic support to nonprofits in the areas of education, health
and human services, the environment and arts and culture. Close to 80% of our foundation’s grants
benefited public charities in Mexico.

Over the past year, the Foundation awarded 86 grants totaling over $4.6 million to 51
nonprofit organizations internationally. These grants provided pro-active solutions to
critical issues such as the cross-border challenges of HIV/AIDS in the San
Diego/Tijuana border region; poverty alleviation in economically marginalized
communities of Oaxaca, Mexico and Guatemala; and providing humanitarian
assistance to natural disasters and flooding relief efforts in Tabasco and Chiapas. We
also supported initiatives that promoted the rule of law by strengthening civil society
based environmental legal defense initiatives in both Mexico and Panama.

In our effort to promote expanded cross-border philanthropy to Mexico, over the
past year our foundation has expanded its collaboration with Mexican community
foundations. Working together with Fundación Internacional de la Comunidad, our
sister foundation in Tijuana, we jointly produced and released the first ever guide
for in-kind donations between the United States and Mexico Through our
partnership with the Oaxaca Community Foundation, our foundation exceeded its
two year goal by raising over $332,000 in support of productive employment
projects in Oaxaca. Our foundation also played a critical leadership role in serving
as the fiscal sponsor for the U.S.-Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership, an
organization committed to promoting expanded community philanthropy along the
U.S.-Mexico border.
During the past year, our foundation established the International Community
Foundation Center, a new supporting organization co-located at our headquarters
in National City, CA. The Center has a three-fold mission, including the expansion of
cross-border civic engagement between San Diego & Baja California; the promotion
of healthy border communities; and maintaining the cultural heritage of National
City and San Diego’s South Bay region.
On the eve of our 20th Anniversary year, our small but passionate team is proud of committed donors
and friends like you who are continuing to loyally support the many internationally based public
charities that we fund on a year to year basis. Together we are making a difference, and together, with
your on-going involvement, we will continue to work to maximize the social impact of your charitable
giving in order to both improve the quality of life and protect critical natural habitats in the regions
internationally where we work.
Sincerely,

Cheryl Hammond
