Among a growing number of companies there is recognition that corporate responsibility is good for business. Organics Unlimited, Inc, a San Diegobased organic tropical fruit supplier, lives by this mantra of applying environmentally sensitive and socially responsible business practices in their organic banana production. The resulting benefits to the environment, farm workers and consumers have been amazing.

As part of the company’s corporate social responsibility objectives, Organics Unlimited was looking for a way to give back to Colima, Mexico, where their suppliers are located. Organics Unlimited turned to ICF because of its charitable giving experience in Mexico and its ability to locate potential qualified nonprofit organizations. Toward this end, Organics Unlimited established the Giving Resources and Opportunities to Workers Fund (GROW) at ICF.

To date, the GROW Fund has distributed more than $61,000 to Project Amigo, A.C., a Colima-based nonprofit that administers scholarship programs for junior high and high school students in Cerro de Ortega. Funding also supports students at the University of Colima by providing living expenses and building the Project Amigo College Endowment Fund.

For Organics Unlimited, the GROW Fund at ICF has been the ideal vehicle to make a difference in the lives of otherwise disadvantaged youth. The company donates a percentage of their monthly proceeds to the fund, which in turn, is helping to increase sales. Mayra Velasquez de Leon, president of Organics Unlimited believes, “As a family-owned business, Organics Unlimited sees the importance of giving back to the communities that need the most help in the areas where our crops are being grown.”
