Loreto Bay was declared a national marine park in 1996 and is over 500,000 acres – most of it in the water. International organizations have identified this area as a model for community-based conservation because of the strong support for the park from local residents. Building on this foundation, Grupo Ecologista Antares (GEA) has focused on environmental education, research, and park monitoring.
The Amigos de GEA Fund at ICF supports GEA’s new Eco-Center for the Desert and the Sea in Loreto. The Eco-Center will house GEA’s marine programs, a dormitory for researchers, and a natural history museum.

| Tony Kinninger began his trips to Loreto in 1973;
Linda joined him in 1988. Since that time, they’ve
witnessed many changes, including the addition of the
Loreto Bay National Marine Park in 1996. As boaters,
fishermen, and scuba divers, Linda and Tony visit the
marine park almost every day when they are in town.
After three years on GEA’s board of directors, Linda
now serves as Vice-President and Chair of “Amigos
de GEA.” Her background in structural planning and
extensive network of local contractors and architects
is helping GEA design the new Eco-Center. |

Grantee: GEA
In early 2005, Tony and Linda Kinninger created the
Amigos de GEA Fund at ICF with a $5,000
donation dedicated to the Eco-Center’s construction.
Friends and donors, like Gordon and Dona Crawford
and Ellen and Duncan McFarland, have added
almost $60,000 to the building fund. |
