Why the Center?

With globalization, immigration, telecommunications and advances in modern travel, communities across the United States are now more globally inter-connected than ever before through the ties that bind them by way of connections made through their immigrant residents, local companies doing business overseas and their institutional sister-city relationships. A growing number of American donors desire to expand their philanthropy internationally by thinking globally and acting locally and otherwise being more “glocal.” Yet, charitable giving to overseas nonprofits remains quite limited among individual donors and even some corporate donors due to the lack of knowledge permissible ways of giving and a few available resources and tools to facilitate such international giving.

In order to dramatically increase the level of charitable giving internationally among U.S. donors, with an emphasis on those donors residing in California, International Community Foundation seeks to establish a new Center that will build on its prior research and grantmaking experience to develop and implement programs and curriculum aimed at actively engaging youth, corporate and immigrant donors to make more meaningful global connections through philanthropy that will benefit local communities throughout California and beyond through expanded trade, commerce, educational opportunities as well as inter-cultural exchange with an emphasis on the U.S-Mexico bilateral relationship.
