[ Advocational
or Creative Pursuit]
we are looking for
people who want to stretch beyond the expectations of their ordinary
lives. We do not support projects that directly relate to or enhance
an applicant's career. For example, a history professor would be turned
down for a proposal in which she seeks to do research in her own field,
but would likely be encouraged if she proposed to pursue her long-standing
interest in calligraphy. The exception to this is for non-faculty applicants
in artistic or creative fields.

Scripps graduate, an award-winning poet, traveled through the countryside
that inspired the Tang poets, met people in the region and sought inspiration
for her own poetry.
