guidelines on establishing a fund

International Community Foundation welcomes contributions of virtually any kind for both permanent and non-endowment funds. Gifts may be made during ones lifetime, or through a bequest or trust. Benefits to the donor include permanence of the gift, tax advantages, flexibility, professional investment management, and immediate impact in the communities that International Community Foundation serves.

  1. Choose whether the fund will be endowment or non-endowment.

    Endowment: permanent; only a portion of earnings are available for granting;

    Non-endowment: earnings and principal available for granting.

  2. Choose whether the fund will be community endowment, field of interest, designated, or advised.

    Community Endowment: donor makes assets available to Foundation Board to serve the greatest current need;

    Create a Donor Advised Fund:
    International Community Foundation offers individual, corporate and family foundations the opportunity to establish either permanent or non-permanent donor advised funds that allow active donor participation in the grant-making process. The donor makes a recommendation to the International Community Foundation Board regarding prospective grantees and grant amounts.

    Field of Interest: Support a Field of Interest Fund:
    To assist donors wishing to make general gifts of support to specific charitable causes in Baja California, International Community Foundation the following field of interest funds: Sustainable Communities Fund; Baja California Disaster Relief Fund; Sea of Cortez Fund; Border Environmental Fund; the International Childrens Fund; and the FIC Fund.

    Support a Friends of Fund:
    International Community Foundation has several funds established by friends of various non-profit organizations in Baja California. These friends of funds provide support to specific programmatic initiatives as well as operating income for these non-profits.

    Designated: donor identifies specific charity to support;

    Become an Active Donor Investor:
    The Baja Social Venture Partners Fund provides an opportunity for like-minded donors to combine their money, talents and experience to actively collaborate in funding innovative charitable initiatives and emerging non-profits with a high social impact along the Baja California Peninsula.

  3. Choose the name of the fund. The International Community Foundation will draft a contract outlining the type and purpose of the fund, as well as all policies, procedures, and fees.
  4. Contribute assets to be part of the fund. (Minimum initial contribution is $5,000.)
