Granted $1,719,217.86 for Third Quarter, FY2008 (04/2008- 06/2008)

Centro Mexicano Para La Defensa Del Medio Ambiente A.C. (Ensenada, B.C., Mexico): $50,000 to implement a two-year legal defense program to monitor, promote and enforce the rule of law in Northwestern Mexico. Also it will provide legal support and training to communities and environmental organizations facing illegal coastal developments. Planned work includes the following development projects: 1) Cabo Cortés in Cabo Pulmo National Park; Ensenada Blanca in the vicinity of the Loreto Bay Marine Park; 2) several developments affecting protected areas in Bahía de los Angeles; and, 3) Puerto Libertad.

Comunidad y Biodiversidad A.C. (Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico): $200,000 to support the following activities designed to restore and manage the marine resources of Northwestern Mexico: 1) build local capacity through workshops; 2) monitor the efficiency of marine protected areas (MPAs); 3) study the spill-over effects of MPAs; 4) participate in the development of fisheries management plans; 5) support enforcement; 6) expand MPAs and no-take zones; 7) develop market tools and incentives for sustainable fisheries; and, 8) develop public policy instruments for fisheries management and MPAs.

Cruz Roja Mexicana, I.A.P. Delegacion Tabasco (Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico): $47,000 to purchase a mobile clinic that will provide medical care to marginalized communities and victims of the floods in Villahermosa, Tabasco.

Eco-Alianza de Loreto (Loreto Centro, BCS, Mexico): $75,000 to provide operational support to Eco-Alianza de Loreto, A.C., in order to kick-off programs and implement the goals and objectives of this new environmental organization.

Fundación Ayuda Niños La Paz, A.C. (La Paz, BCS, Mexico): $30,000 to build a study center in the existing community center located in Colonia Laguna Azul on the outskirts of La Paz, BCS.

Fundacion Azteca (Obregon, Mexico): $30,858.86 for the "Ciudades Rurales" (Rural Cities) initiative which aims to support housing reconstruction efforts in the community of Juan de Grijalva, Chiapas - a community that was impacted by the Tabasco/Chiapas floods October 28, 2007.

Fundación Internacional de la Comunidad, A. C. (California, USA): $3,000 to support Fundación Internacional de la Comunidad and their computer donation program TICS.

Fundacion Para el Desarrollo de la Libertad Ciudadana (CIAM) (Panama City, Panama): $240,560 to provide operating support to CIAM for the executive director, two attorneys, and administrative staff, as well as direct expenses for the entire office. In addition, there is $65,000 for seminars, campaigns, and technical studies.

Fundación MarViva (Panama City, Panama): $115,000 to provide funding for patrol boats to stop illegal fishing off the coasts of Central America and to provide enforcement support to the Coiba National Park in Panama.

Fundación Tarpuy (Córdoba, Argentina): $134,000 to support a scholarship program for high school and university students (ESCALAR); support for the cafeteria program (JUNTOS); provide scholarships for universities students studying telecommunications (PROCOM) and to promote artistic and cultural expressions within the Argentine society (MINKAY).

Grupo Ecologista Antares, A.C. (GEA) (Loreto, BCS, Mexico): $27,300 to continue the monitoring of marine life in the Loreto marine park and the environmental education program of youth in Loreto.

HELPS International (Texas, USA): $2,300 will allow HELPS International to purchase 17 ONIL stove sets to donate to Mayanfam in Guatemala to replace open-flame fire pit cooking that causes respiratory illness and severe burns, especially to children.

Pronatura Noroeste, A.C. (Ensenada, B.C., Mexico): $35,000 to support year one of a four-year program of institutional development to strengthen fundraising, media outreach, and branding of the Northwestern Mexico program.

Punta de Mita Foundation (Punta Mita, Jalisco, Mexico): $84,400 in order to support the grant’s three-fold purpose: $10,000 will cover 3 months salary for the Punta de Mita Foundation Executive Director;  $60,000 will be part of a larger grant that will be administered to P.E.A.C.E., a local nonprofit whose mission is to facilitate sustainable programs and nurtures self-empowerment throughout Mexico by providing communities and individuals with tools to improve their quality of life;  $14,400 will be applied toward the foundation's sustainable development initiative in Punta de Mita, in partnership with P.E.A.C.E.

PVO México, A.C. (Mexico, D.F.): $50,000 to provide medical services to four rural communities in the outskirts of Mexico City, including: 1. Villa Victoria Municipality 2. San Jose del Rincon 3. San Mateo Atenco 4. Temascalcingo. These services will include: 1. Colposcopy studies (uterine ultrasound for cancer detection) 2. Dental services 3. Eye exams & provision of free glasses 4. General medical check-ups. In addition, $5,000 dollars will go toward the “In Memoriam Richard Hojel” Scholarship fund to provide financial assistance to students from secondary school through higher level education.

Rainforest Alliance, Inc. (New York, USA): $10,000 to convene two workshops in Baja California Sur, one for small and medium enterprises (SME) and one for larger hotels on sustainable business practices. The objective of these workshops is to create a knowledgeable cluster of sustainable tourism enterprises in the Sea of Cortés region. Also, to support SMEs and hotel chains to work together to implement best practices and to access sustainable tourism markets.

San Diego Natural History Museum (California, USA): $55,000 to provide support for the Gulf of California Deep-Sea Biodiversity Expedition aimed at increasing our understanding of the biodiversity, community structure, and behavior of fishes and invertebrates from the deep-sea habitats of the Gulf of California.

Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO), University of California, San Diego (UCSD) (California, USA): $11,799 as a 1-to-1 challenge grant to support a Mexican student from Baja California Sur to pursue a Masters of Science degree in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation program with a fisheries management concentration at the Center of Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (CMBC), Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This grant is conditioned on the student’s commitment to return to Baja California peninsula to pursue work in the area of marine conservation and fisheries management for at least two years following graduation.

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) (Panama City, Panama): $15,000 to launch a communications and outreach campaign to promote the biological importance of Las Perlas Islands, and to outline the risks that currently exist from poor development planning. The campaign will be six months in length, and will have print, radio, and TV exposure.

Sociedad de Historia Natural Niparajá A.C. (La Paz, BCS, Mexico): $170,000 for operational and programmatic support to strengthen marine conservation programs (management of Espiritu Santo National Marine Park; protection of Bahia de La Paz; Balandra; marine protected areas & sustainable fishing practices) and organizational development.

Union de Empresarios para la Tecnologia en la Educacion, A.C. (UNETE) (Mexico City, Mexico): $18,000 to support the equipping of a computer lab in a school (Escuela Tecnica 40, CCT 02DTS0041G) in Baja California.

Vigilantes de Bahía Magdalena, A.C. (Puerto San Carlos, BCS, Mexico): $20,000 to provide operational support to Magdalena Baykeeper to implement its programs in the following areas: environmental health, environmental education, and defense of the natural resources of Magdalena Bay

Wildcoast (California, USA): $295,000 to provide charitable support in collaboration with other foundations for acquisition of four parcels totaling 2,023 acres of coastal lands in the Valle de los Cirios, Baja California.
