It was a very special July for eight students of The Palapa Society’s A Bridge to English (Puente hacia el Ingles) program. In recognition of their merit and class attendance throughout the school year, these students, ranging in age from six to ten years old, were invited to participate for free in a painting class taught by Todos Santos’ very own artist, Erick Ochoa García.
The 28-year-old Erick Ochoa began painting six years ago under the tutelage of Michael Cope, fellow painter and owner of the Galería de Todos Santos. “Teaching Eric to paint was one of the best investments I ever made. He’s one of the top selling artists in the gallery,” said Michael.
Donna Viglione, pioneer of the A Bridge to English program, wanted to provide the kids with a fun summer program, something new that would expand their minds, and that they could learn from a young, thriving Mexican artist. The class met twice a week during the month of July at The Palapa Society building. The new mural in the courtyard shows that it was a huge success.
Erick with his huge wide smile and unassuming nature seems to be a natural teacher. He exudes patience and understanding and the word on the street is the kids adore him. “I loved working with the kids,” smiled Erick. “They always left me feeling so happy and inspired. I’m looking forward to the class in October.”
The class was such a success and since there are more concrete walls to be painted in the courtyard, Donna and Erick have decided to continue the class on Saturday mornings beginning October 27. The new class will have no more than ten students who must also be participates in the A Bridge to English program. They will also have to continue to have merit and good attendance.
I asked Erick if there was anything the community could do to help facilitate this program and he responded, “Support it. I think it’s important to remember in this time of growth when Todos Santos is receiving so many accolades such as Pueblo Magico (magical town) that the secret to the future of the pueblo is the kids.”
