This past November, I had the pleasure of visiting Fundacion Ayuda Ninos La Paz for the first time as I was made aware of it through my association with the International Community Foundation.

My preconceived expectations were much less than what I experienced. First, I was impressed by the building itself both inside and outside. It has a secure parameter around the two-story building with plenty of room for the kids to come and go without roaming around the street. Inside was well structured and very clean with space on the first floor for the kitchen area and the arts and crafts room. Next, I was impressed by how well organized the process was in which the children come to gather their lunch from the several volunteers who prepare it and I was pleasantly surprised at how happy and polite these children were as they enjoyed their meals.

Moving upstairs to the library, I was even more impressed at not only the number of books, but the category of choices available from history to psychology to the classics like Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Gulliver's Travels. All of these books are in excellent condition and well organized and managed by the staff. The library has several reading tables and chairs and the best part are the 6 computers they have ready to power-up! I was disappointed to hear they do not have internet access yet but it made me happy to think of what these children will experience after they get exposure to the outside world with the Internet.

My visit enlightened me by realizing how the simple things in life can bring one happiness. I saw it first hand and encourage everyone to experience how their contributions help make a difference.
