International Community Foundation Partners with The San Diego Foundation to Offer Gift Annuities to Benefit Charities Internationally
Newsletter

In an effort to offer its donors with expanded planned giving tools on a cross-border basis, the International Community Foundation has partnered with The San Diego Foundation to offer a unique internationally focused charitable gift annuity (CGA) program. The CGAGCA program has the potential to benefit the International Community Foundation’s many programs as well as the growing number of nonprofits in Mexico and Central America that we support with established friends of funds at the Foundation.

What is a Gift Annuity?

A Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) can provide an immediate or deferred income for the life of one or two designated individuals, (a portion of the income may be tax-free), may generate a charitable deduction for the donor, and allows the remaining assets to be used to support your favorite charities and/or charitable causes in Mexico or Central America through the International Community Foundation. CGAs are backed by the full faith and credit of The San Diego Foundation (TSDF).

A Charitable Gift Annuity is a contract between the donor(s) and The San Diego Foundation, whereby TSDF agrees to make payments for the life of one or two designated individuals. TSDF offer immediate CGAs to individuals 65 and over and deferred CGAs are considered on a case-by-case basis. The annuity rate varies positively with age. The minimum contribution to a Charitable Gift Annuity is $25,000. After the lifetime(s) of the donor(s) the remaining assets are used to support the donor(s) favorite organizations or charitable causes.

A CGA is ideal for any donor of the International Community Foundation who wishes to receive an annuity for life in exchange for a contribution to benefit an internationally based charity and/or has an appreciated, liquid asset yielding a low return, but is reluctant to sell the asset and reinvest because of capital gains tax exposure. Cash may also be used to create a charitable gift annuity.
A CGA is an US IRS approved gift vehicle. It is not an investment. It provides income, partially tax free and current income tax charitable deduction to the donor. Both the International Community Foundation and The San Diego Foundation recommend that donors consult their professional advisor on how a charitable gift annuity will financially impact them.

What are the Benefits?
There are many benefits to establishing a Charitable Gift Annuity. In addition to fixed income for life, you will receive a charitable tax deduction to reduce your taxes in the year you make your gift. If you make a gift of appreciated property such as stock or real estate, you may also avoid paying some of the capital gains tax on the sale of your property.

How is My Gift Annuity Taxed?
A gift annuity produces ordinary income and will be taxed at your normal income tax rate. However, if your gift is appreciated property, a portion of your income will be taxed at the lower capital gains tax rate. A portion of your income could be tax free if you make a gift of cash or appreciated property.

The International Community Foundation Charitable Gift Annuity Program:
The International Community Foundation is partnering with The San Diego Foundation to offer its donors with the ability to establish a charitable gift annuity (CGA) through The San Diego Foundation for further benefit of ICF programs and/or approved friends of funds for Mexican and Central American charities that our Foundation provides fiscal sponsorship for.
