ICF Establishes Disaster Relief Funds to Address Humanitarian Efforts in South Asia,
Mexico and Central America
The present needs in South Asia, and Mexico and Central
America are great. Along the India-Pakistan border tens of
thousands of people were killed by the 7.6 earthquake that
hit October 8th. Currently, an estimated 3.5 million people
are in need of immediate assistance. In Mexico and Central
America hundreds have been killed through flooding and
landslides from hurricanes Stan and Wilma. Without additional
assistance, thousands more will die or will suffer from
malnutrition or otherwise preventable waterborne diseases.
During this upcoming Holiday Season, ICF urges you to please
consider giving generously to these causes to help bring a
beam of hope to these communities in great need.
How you can make a
difference:
In response to these crises, ICF has established two
emergency relief funds to asist in the disaster relief,
reconstruction, and recovery in South Asia, Mexico and
Central America.
UN Disaster Relief Fund
Supports UN agencies in addressing priority emergency
disaster relief efforts for two key projects in
Pakistan’s Kashmir region: 1) Transitional Rural Housing
Rehabilitation with special emphasis on the communities
of Muzaffarabad, Manshera, Balakot and Batagram; and
2)Provide heating and cooking needs through Liquefied
Petroleum Gas/other fuels and utilization of efficient
cooking technologies in the earthquake affected areas
during 2005-06 winters. In support of this campaign the
UN Foundation has agreed to provide $50,000 on a 1:2
matching basis.
International Water Emergency Relief Fund
Provides immediate relief to communities and victims
affected by recent hurricanes in the Mexican states of
Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Veracruz, as well as Central
America. $20,000 has already been granted to
SHARE-Guatemala to rehabilitate community water systems
in some of the communities most affected by flooding and
landslides from Hurricane Stan, in particular Agua
Tibia, El Duraznal and Rio Hondo. This has made been
possible thanks to Stephen and Sandy Rosenthal’s
Global
Poverty Fund at ICF, established via their donor advised
fund at the Greater New Orleans Community Foundation.
ICF funding will also provide water filters to at least
100 vulnerable families that reside in these communities
as well as training on low-cost water purification
techniques for another 100 families.
