ICF Establishes Disaster Relief Funds to Address Humanitarian Efforts in South Asia

Protecting Laguna San Ignacio, Mexico
On October 25, 2005, the International Community Foundation (ICF) signed an historic agreement with Pronatura Noroeste and Ejido Luis Echeverria Alvarez (LEA) to protect 120,000 acres of pristine wildlife habitat in Laguna San Ignacio, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The voluntary agreement will provide clear guidelines for local ejiditarios as they implement conservation and sustainable development projects on their communally-owned lands. >>click here

UCSD and ICF release book on Mexican migrants in San Diego County
To better understand the needs and on-going challenges of San Diego County’s Mexican migrant community, University of California, San Diego (UCSD)’s Center for U.S.-Mexico Studies (UCSD-USMEX) published a book entitled The Ties that Bind Us: Mexican Migrants in San Diego County. Co-edited by ICF’s President & CEO, Richard Kiy, and UCSD Economics Associate Professor Chris Woodruff, The Ties That Bind Us examines the difficult living and working conditions of Mexican migrant workers in San Diego County, California, considering policy implications for both sides of the US-Mexico border... >>More

Assessing Loreto’s Alternative Futures
Incorporated in 1991 with a population of 9,200, Loreto, Baja California Sur remains a small coastal community of 15,000, with just 10,000 people in its city center. Elected officials are now considering the approval of an urban development plan, originally prepared by Mexico’s tourism development agency, FONATUR. The plan calls for an expanded urban region of up to 120,000 people over the next 20 years – representing a population growth rate of 11%. Questions remain about available water resources and the socioeconomic impacts of such growth on the community. >> click here

UN Launches Habitat Jam: Urban growth challenges of the Baja California Peninsula will be featured
As part of the preparations for the third session of the World Urban Forum, the Government of Canada in partnership with UN-HABITAT is sponsoring this 72-hour internet event called Habitat Jam. From December 1-3, 2005, the Habitat JAM will gather input from around the world and add it to thousands of others to turn ideas into actions for the Vancouver World Urban Forum agenda and influence the Forum’s content. >>Click Here

Wyland Paints His 92nd Whaling Wall in La Paz
In August 2005, the community of La Paz came together for four days to experience a magical event. Art, education, and music spilled out onto the malecón as Wyland, the well-known marine life muralist from Laguna Beach, brought his “Wyland Ocean Challenge” to Baja California Sur.>>Click Here
