Many of ICF’s donors enjoy recreational and sportfishing in the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) region of Baja California and Baja California Sur. Keeping these fishing stocks at a sustainable level is critical for local villages and for tourism operators, both of which depend on healthy stocks and predictable fishing seasons.

This quarter, ICF highlights three loal nonprofit organizations that are taking the lead in fisheries in the Gulf of California, focusing on marine protected areas, fisher-to-fisher networking, and scientific research.
Grupo Ecologista Antares, A.C. (GEA), Loreto Bay National Park, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Based in Loreto, GEA helped establish the Loreto Bay National Park and is currently focusing on its expansion. GEA works regularly with the park service on enforcement and monitoring of “no-take zones” and the artificial reef inside the park. GEA's programs include: an active monitoring program for fish, sea lions, whales, sharks, and sea turtles; and environmental education programs for students, tourists, and local decision-makers.

By supporting GEA, you will contribute to:

  • Expanding Loreto Bay National Park
  • Building the Eco-Center for the Desert and the Sea
  • Supporting the marine mammal, turtle, and shark protection programs in Loreto

Comunidad y Biodiversidad, A.C.(COBI), Loreto Bay National Park, Baja California Sur; San Pedro Martír Island Biosphere Reserve, Gulf of California; and Bahía Kino, Sonora, Mexico

COBI is a marine conservation organization focusing on alternatives to overfishing in the Gulf of California. With a science-based approach, COBI is providing concrete data in “no-take zones” of existing marine protected areas in Loreto and San Pedro Martír Island, as well as along Sonora’s coastal waters, to help build a justification for a network of marine protected areas in the Gulf of California.

By supporting COBI, you will contribute to:

  • Promoting sustainable fishing practices

  • Researching fishing stocks in the Gulf of California

Sociedad de Historia Natural Niparajá, A.C., Isla Espíritu Santo and San Cosme- Punto Mechudo Corridor, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Niparajá has focused its efforts on protecting the coastal landscape between La Paz and Loreto in Baja California Sur, including the offshore islands in the area. Their work includes land acquisition, fisheries policy reform, community development and productive employment projects, as well as environmental education. Niparajá's initiatives include: organizing the second fisherto- fisher exchange in La Paz, which will bring over 100 fishermen from the Gulf of California region to discuss best practices, challenges, and potential solutions; as well as establishing a marine protected area adjacent to Isla Espíritu Santo.

By supporting Niparajá, you will contribute to:

  • Protecting critical marine habitat near La Paz
  • Purchasing coastal properties slated for development
  • Establishing a network of fishermen in the Gulf of California
