Wyland
Paints His 92nd Whaling Wall in La Paz

“The best way to teach someone about
environmental conservation is to simply show
them what they are conserving. I’m proud that La
Paz is one of the last ten walls that I’ll paint
in the world. The Sea of Cortez is an incredible
place!” |

In
August 2005, the community of La Paz came together for
four days to experience a magical event. Art, education,
and music spilled out onto the malecón as Wyland, the
well-known marine life muralist from Laguna Beach,
brought his “Wyland Ocean Challenge” to Baja California
Sur.
Over 30 local artists and hundreds of community
members, students, and children participated in the
“Wyland Ocean Challenge,” a coastal awareness event
designed to help diverse audiences appreciate local
water resources. La Paz was part of a 12-city Pacific
Coast Tour that began in June in Anchorage, Alaska. In
La Paz, the “Wyland Ocean Challenge” resulted in a
community mural, a children’s mural, an art contest, and
the mural itself. Wyland dedicated the wall as his 92nd
Whaling Wall on August 7, 2005.
The event’s overall success was possible thanks to the
collaboration of ICF staff, Redondo Beach civic leaders,
including Rotary Club, PROBEA and Wyland’s team, as well
as support from government, civic, and business
organizations in La Paz, including Rotary Club of La
Paz.
Whaling Wall #92 can be found at Callejón Ignacio
Bauelos Cabezud in La Paz. For ICF’s photo gallery, go
