DONATES SCULPTURE TO LA PAZ On
December 2, 2002 the International Community Foundation
donated the sculpture “La Reina de Los Mares”
(The Queen of the Seas) to the city of La Paz to be
placed on the boardwalk of this seaside coastal community.
The donation of the statue was made possible through
an anonymous donor.

REINHART
FOUNDATION FUND ESTABLISHED
ICF
has received $875,000 to establish the Reinhart Foundation
Fund to facilitate grants for projects and initiatives
in the area of education as well as archeology in Mexico.
The Reinhart family is interested in increasing the
level of educational attainment among children in Mexican
public schools.

ICF
JOINS THE U.S./MEXICO BORDER PHILANTHROPHY INITIATIVE
In
2002, a group of national and regional funders, The
Synergos Institute, and twenty community foundations
from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, formed the
U.S.-Mexico Border Philanthropy Initiative. This partnership
is a innovative bi-national collaboration of local leaders,
donors and local community foundations seeking to improve
the quality of life in under-served communities in the
rapidly growing border region.

SEA
OF CORTEZ FUND ESTABLISHED AT ICF
ICF
has recently established its Sea of Cortez Fund to permit
donors, big and small, make contributions of any amount
to support conservation initiatives aimed at protecting
this unique natural wonder. As a way of catalyzing this
fund, ICF has just approved $180,000 in targeted donor-advised
grants to nine non-profit organizations – six
Mexican and three U.S. groups – working to protect
the fragile coastal and marine resources of the Sea
of Cortez.

TIJUANA
PUBLIC LIBRARY UPDATE
During
Spring 2002 the Tijuana Library Fund was established
at ICF to facilitate charitable giving to the first
major public library in Tijuana. Thanks to the collective
efforts of ICF donors such as John McNeece III, Sempra
Energy, Leon Reinhart, Lucy Killea and Augustine Gallego
along with the generous support of the Lannan Foundation
and various other local Tijuana donors, the Loyola Public
Library at the Universidad Ibero Americana is now close
to becoming a reality.

BOARD
DEVELOPMENTS
During
the Fall 2002, ICF’s Board of Governors elected
Leon Reinhart to serve as ICF’s
new Chairman of the Board. The Former Chairman and CEO
of First National Bank, Reinhart brings over 30 years
of experience in international business to the foundation.
In
other developments, ICF’s Board of Governors also
elected two new members: Chris Waddell
and Dr. Alice Chung-Chau Tang.

NEW
STAFF
In
an effort to expand ICF’s programmatic focus in
the U.S.-Mexico border region as well as in the area
of education, Amy Carstensen was recently hired as the
foundation’s Program Officer. In the coming months,
Amy will be leading the foundation’s efforts to
implement the Las Californias Youth Fellowship Program
for underprivileged but high achieving high school students
from San Diego and Tijuana funded, in part, through
the Rockefeller Foundation. She will also support ICF’s
work in the area of environmental education including
recent outreach in this area in La Paz, BCS.

the KPBS program "Full Focus" which explored
the challenges and opportunities in philanthropy along
the U.S.-Mexico Border. The program aired on December
4th, 2002 on this local San Diego Public Television
Station.

work in expanding charitable giving to Asia and the
Americas with San Diego's immigrant community was highlighted
in Neil Morgan's November 20th, 2002 column in the San
Diego Union Tribune entitled "San Diegans show
