BAJA CALIFORNIA DISASTER RELIEF FUND ESTABLISHED

In mid-February over 400 families were left homeless in Tijuana from the fire that raged through the city. In response, donors Loch and Claire Crane contacted ICF to see what could be done to help affected families as well as to explore potential options for re-building of homes for the families most in need.

Discussions with the Cranes led to the idea of establishing ICF’s Baja California Disaster Relief Fund in order to better position the foundation to respond in a more timely fashion to community based needs arising from natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes, flooding, fires, chemical spills, cold weather storms, etc.) that could impact communities in neighboring Baja California.
In support of this fund, the Crane Family has committed $5,000 to support home re-construction in Colonia Nueva Aurora in Tijuana with work to be led by the San Diego-area non-profit Project Mercy and their team of volunteers. Another $3,000 will be made available by ICF’s Discretionary Grantmaking Fund to support this effort. The average cost of home construction is between $1,100 to $2,500 depending on the size and specific family needs.
