SYNERGOS
VISIT
In late February ICF met with consultants representing
Synergos, a non-profit organization dedicated to building
the capacity of community foundations in Latin America,
Southeast Asia, and Southern Africa. Synergos has been
contracted by The Ford Foundation to do a feseability
study of community foundations along the U.S/Mexico border
and to develop a funding plan for the region. The Ford
Foundations has earmarked $3 million for the border region
and will try to involve other funders to augment that
amount. Their focus will be on building funding institutions
on both sides of the border and on cross border entities.
They particularly want to help insure the permanence of
these organizations, so the funding will likely be at
least in part endowment funding, with some kind of challenge
or match required in raising local endowment funds. The
consultants are doing site visits this spring, developing
a report to Ford this summer, and convening a group of
other national foundations in September. Then they will
draft an RFP, which will be by invitation only and assemble
a committee of experts to recommend grantees. The series
of meetings were very positive and the representatives
were especially impressed with the enthusiasm, knowledge,
and commitment of the ICF and FIC board members. Vivian
Blair, an independent consultant based in Mexico City
who is also on the Ford team, |
