CHINA SITE VISIT
Last month in Shanghai Lucy Killea met Dr. Robert Chang,
fund advisor to the Robert & Joyce Chang Advised Fund,
to visit the Yonghui Hope Project, an education project
for building schools in East Central rural China. The
project's officers presented Killea and Chang with a report
on the project, after which they toured the facility,
discussed immediate needs, and received information on
possible future projects. The Robert & Joyce Chang Advised
Fund has granted a total of $150,000 in the year it has
been managed by ICF. The fund is the beneficiary of a
lead trust, providing long term funds for education projects
by ICF. |

INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S FUND
(ICD 2000)
This year ICF has teamed up with Sempra Energy to provide
$50,000 in grants to organizations serving children in
need in the Tijuana area. Sempra has committed $25,000
for ICD 2000 with an additional $7,500 for ICF's operational
capacity. The Sempra grant will serve as leverage to raise
the remaining $25,000. We anticipate $10,000 will be provided
by ICF Funds and the other $15,000 by individuals in the
community. Requests for proposals to receive grants were
sent to 75 Tijuana organizations. The deadline to receive
proposals is March 1, 2000. If you would like to receive
a copy of the RFP please call Marisol LÚpez at 619.235.2300. |

DEVELOPING
RELATIONSHIPS
ICF met for the second time with Michael Fisher and Dave
Lorey from the Hewlett Foundation to explore the possibility
of collaborating on an environmental initiative in Tijuana.
The Hewlett Foundation wants to grant funds directly to
Mexico and are interested in the opening of the Tijuana-based
foundation. Tijuanan non-profits currently receiving funds
from the Hewlett Foundation are Pro Esteros, Pro Natura,
and Proyecto Fronterizo. ICF will keep Hewlett informed
of the progress toward establishing the Tijuana-based
foundation. The Ball Foundation has approached ICF to
begin talks on the possibility of a border charter school.
ICF's role would be as a potential facilitator/fiscal
agent for the project. We are also talking about bringing
into the project other players who are involved in cross-border
teacher training such as The Natural History Museum and
SANDAG. |
