Federal Lands

Federal Lands

Federal Lands are tracts of land held by the Mexican Federal Government. The federal government can make use of land by itself, in partnership with a private company or by granting concessions. A large tract of federal land located on the northwest coast of the lagoon was the proposed site of ESSA’s crystallization ponds, the concentration ponds, and the saturated brine ponds.

Project team strategy for federal lands includes requesting a concession of the coastal Federal Zone (60 feet in from mean high tide) and granting the rights of the concession to the Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve. If the Mexican government denies the application and decides to grant mining concession, the Alliance will legally challenge this concession. Implementation funds will be available to the project team for Federal Zone legal services, costs, challenges, and implementation.
