The San Diego-Baja California region faces some significant cross-border health care access issues, which if left un-addressed, could have irreparable consequences on the regional economy on both sides of the international border in the coming years. Today institutional impediments preclude many of the binational region’s most vulnerable populations from receiving the care they need; including a growing number of migrant workers infected with HIV/AIDs and tuberculosis (TB).
Clearly, more can and should be done by government to better coordinate initiatives at the local/regional, state and federal levels, but government is not in a position to address the growing trans-boundary health care challenges alone. If our binational region is to effectively address our future health care challenges, greater cooperation will be needed by the private sector, government, academia, the nonprofit sector as well as funders (individual and foundations) committed to making a difference.
To learn more about how you can make a difference in addressing our region’s emerging cross-border heath challenges, the International Community Foundation (ICF) invites you to view our film: “Fragile Lives: Blurring Lines: Addressing the Critical Health Challenges in the San Diego-Baja California border region” For your reference, additional border health resources are available on this web page. |
