Los Niños del Capitán to receive Grantee of the Year Award
May 11, 2005

In the outskirts of Cabo San Lucas, in an area usually not seen by tourists, is an oasis of inspiration filled with laughter, singing and playing, the daycare facility of Los Niños Del Capitán in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico.
Los Niños Del Capitan is a model Mexican nonprofit that currently provides daycare to over 120 children of working parents. The parents pay approximately $10 USD a week and in turn the children receive breakfast and lunch, as well as basic preschool instruction in a loving and nurturing environment.

The success of Los Niños Del Capitan resides in the hard work and dedication of the “abuelita”, or grandmother, as the children of the daycare refer to Herminia Losada, the executive director of Los Niños. When asked why she volunteers her time at Los Niños Del Capitan she replied, “because of the need to serve others and because I receive way more than I give!”

This Saturday, May 14th, Herminia Losada, in representation of the Los Niños Del Capitan, will be receiving recognition from the International Community Foundation (ICF) as ICF’s 2005 Grantee of the Year. The award will not only recognize Ms. Losada and her team’s amazing efforts at promoting and strengthening civil society participation in Baja California Sur to make a difference in their community, but it will also recognize the donors that help make their hard work come to life! In particular the efforts of the Cellar family through their “Team Misiones” fund at ICF, the Rotary club of Bellingham, Washington for starting a “friends of” fund at ICF for Los Niños, and Universal Life Resources (ULR) for its employee matching gift donation and volunteer time that made the Los Niños completion of the daycare center, the medical clinic and dental facility possible.

Presenting the award will be Mimi, former singer of the famous Mexican pop-group Flans and host of the Mexican morning show, “Cada Mañana” from TV Azteca.
