United
Nations Foundation addresses students from Torrey Hills
Elementary for their efforts in fundraising for the
tsunami
March 10, 2005 (San Diego, CA )
On Friday, March
4, 2005, Kathryn Bushkin, Executive Vice-President and
Chief Financial Officer of the United Nations Foundation,
visited the students from Torrey Hills Elementary as
a way of acknowledging their efforts in fundraising
for the tsunami. “I am a citizen of the world”,
is what Ms. Bushkin asked all the children to repeat
one after another, as way of helping them understand
the magnitude and impact of their efforts.
Students from grades
K-6th at Torrey Hills School joined forces with the
International Community Foundation (ICF), headed by
local resident Richard Kiy, to raise funds for the Tsunami
Disaster Relief Fund, at ICF. Alone, the kids were able
to collect $6700 to donate to the children of South
Asia that had been affected by the tsunami. According
to one Torrey Hills School 3rd grader, “every
penny counts”.
But Torrey Hills
Students were not the only ones to participate in this
collaborative effort. In fact, a total of four schools
from Del Mar Union School District stepped up to the
plate to help raise funds for the tsunami: Torrey Hills
School ($6,700), Del Mar Hills Academy ($2,100), Carmel
Del Mar School ($2075), and Del Mar Heights ($3,604).
Together, they were able to raise over $14,000 dollars.
“Kids to the rescue” is what ICF called
them, our hope for a better world.
