Janet Bower (Newlan) - Volunteer - Resident Historian and Docent

In 1947 the parents of Janet Bower, Murvel (Bud) and Esther Newlan, purchased the house at 2525 "N" Avenue from Oliver C. Noyes, son of its builder, Oliver H. Noyes. Her family owned the house and property for the next forty-two years. Janet, her brother, Scott, and sister, Marian grew up here. The memories are many and warm with reminiscences of special moments--picnics in the backyard, Duchess, our Dorberman pinscher, racing for Easter baskets on the lawn, the fire crackling in the family room fireplace as our family talked and watched television. Christmas was always celebrated with a huge tree festooned with large glass ornaments and icicles. My grandparents, Harry and Jessie Clark, long-time residents of National City, were always seated in the Green Room as we passed out presents in front of the second birds-eye maple mantel with green marble. Family gatherings, social get-togathers, always meant laughter, good food and fun friends.

With such great memories of this lovely old house, it is probably not surprising that Janet decided to major in history in college. She took her master’s degree in history at UCLA and a master’s degree in Education at United States International University. For over twenty-three years, she taught part-time at various San Diego county community colleges. Although Janet resigned from San Diego Mesa (San Diego Community College District), Palomar College, and Mira Costa College in December, 2007, she is still teaching part-time as a retiree at Mesa. She has published professionally, primarily in natural history. She currently is involved in working with several nonprofits.

"I was delighted when International Communities Foundation asked if I would be interested in becoming
the resident docent/historian for this house and property. I've long loved this place and this is
a very special opportunity to continue
my association with it and with The International Community Foundation." Janet Bower
